Vendors at Klong Toey's fresh market and the Port Authority of Thailand need to settle their differences in the wake of Wednesday's bloodshed, the prime minister says.

Two security guards were shot dead in what is believed to have been a dispute between the PAT and vendors.

Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday said the problem originated with the PAT and the contract for the operation of the Klong Toey market.

He said it was essential that the Port Authority approached the vendors, sat down to hear their problems and worked out a solution in a transparent manner.

He also promised to urge other parties concerned to help solve the problem.

Transport Minister Sohpon Zarum, who supervises the PAT, told Mr Abhisit the protests were winding down as the vendors were convinced there would be a change in the market contractor.

Mr Abhisit said he had warned the minister repeatedly of other possible problems because the protests involved influential people.
