Verizon Unveils Music, App Stores

The carrier is taking a big swipe at Apple by offering downloadable music tracks and an over-the-air app store for its mobile phones.

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless is branching out beyond voice and data services, and the carrier has opened up online stores for music and mobile applications.

The company's online music store will be a direct competitor to Apple's iTunes juggernaut, as it will offer users downloadable music by the track. The company will have more than 5 million tracks in its store, and it said most of the songs won't come with digital-rights management software so the music can be played on multiple devices.
