Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said Tuesday that Bangkok is at risk of terrorist attacks by insurgents traveling from Thailand's southern provinces during the New Year holiday period, local newspaper The Nation reported on its website.

Citing an urgent report by the National Intelligence Agency, Sukhumbhand said the insurgents were now based mainly in Bangkok's Bang Kapi district and would carry out "non-lethal" attacks at celebratory events to just "cause disturbance".

The directors of Bangkok’s 50 district offices have been instructed to be on a standby, especially to watch out for incidents at local celebratory events in their jurisdiction, he added.

Insurgent violence in Thailand's three southernmost provinces -- Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani -- have killed over 3,500 people in the region since its resurrection in January 2004.
