The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has dispatched city hall officials to work with police round-the-clock at major department stores until January 4, Dr. Malinee Sukvejvorakij, deputy BMA governor, said Thursday.

After inspecting accident prevention preparations at CentralWorld department store in downtown Bangkok, Dr. Malinee said that more than 1,700 BMA officials and policemen would man the mall area where revellers will attend the main New Year countdown.

Doctors, nurses, emergency workers and ambulances will also be on standby, said Dr. Malinee, adding that city hall workers and police will be posted round-the-clock at 35 sites considered prone to risk around Bangkok until next Monday.

Traffic from CentralWorld to Prathunam intersection will be closed from 6pm New Year’s Eve until 2am on New Year’s Day.

Random surveys at some entertainment venues, especially at Royal City Avenue (RCA), found that owners have installed more fire protection equipment as well as preparing exits for their clientele following last year’s inferno at the Santika Club’s New Year’s celebrations.
