UNIFEM, Thailand’s Ministry of Justice and Thai Airways International have jointly launched an in-flight fundraising initiative Change NOW! Say NO to Violence Against Women. As part of this initiative, Thai Airways will air a public service announcement featuring Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand and UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador onboard all domestic and international flights—a total of 250 flights a day—in January 2010.

The initiative will help collect passenger donations of unused currency in an onboard coin‐drive. The funds collected will support UNIFEM’s programming around gender‐based violence. The public service announcement is the latest of the HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha’s participation in various media campaigns and public awareness initiatives showcasing support for the cause. In New York, UNIFEM recently honoured the Princess for her work on ending violence against women and girls.

As Goodwill Ambassador for UNIFEM in Thailand, the Princess has been active in raising public awareness about UNIFEM’s Say NO – UNiTE initiative and mobilizing all segments of Thai society to help eliminate violence against women, said Kittipong Kittayarak, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice.

“We cannot fully eliminate violence against women without the consistent support and commitment of the government, civil society, NGOs, the private sector and individuals,” said Jean D'Cunha, Regional Programme Director for UNIFEM East and Southeast Asia Regional.

“THAI [Airways] is very proud to be part of promoting CHANGE NOW! THAI realizes the importance of preventing violence against women,” President of Thai Airways Mr. Piyasvasti Amranand said. “Living in society needs to involve caring, unity and giving. Preventing the violence will help create social benefit; therefore, this campaign will create social wellness.”
