Honda Motor Co., Japan’s second- largest carmaker, plans to introduce a new compact car in India to challenge the dominance of Suzuki Motor Corp. in the country.

The car, based on a concept model displayed at the Delhi auto show, will be introduced in the country and in Thailand in 2011, the company said in a statement today.

Tokyo-based Honda started selling the Jazz hatchback, its first compact for India, in June. Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. also plan to sell small cars in India, where such vehicles account for almost three-quarters of all cars sold, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

The new compact will be smaller than the Jazz, known as the Fit in Japan, according to the company.
