Haiti earthquake: Miracle of three-week-old baby Eisabeth Joassaint pulled from rubble alive after a week

Elisabeth Joassaint was just two weeks old when the ceiling of her home came crashing down on her cot.

Her mother Michel, 22, tried desperately to reach the second floor of the building where her tiny daughter had been sleeping.

But she was forced back by collapsing masonry and dust. Fleeing the house in tears, she believed Elisabeth to be dead.

Elisabeth, however, was very much alive and endured seven days in the wreckage before French rescuers found her nestled on her bed in a 15cm gap between the debris.



She was plucked free from the rubble with barely a scratch and a messenger dispatched to find her mother who had been living on a football field since the disaster. 

'I just cried and ran to my baby,' Mrs Joassaint said. 'Her survival is down to the mercy of God.'

Elisabeth's grandfather Michelet Joassaint, 47, added: 'This wasn't the way Jesus wanted the baby to die.'

The baby's rescue follows the astonishing story of a seven-year-old boy named Kiki who had been trapped for eight days.

He was pulled free with his arms wide open and eyes sparkling with joy to be handed over to his weeping mother's embrace.
