PM assures people that his government will maintain Thailand’s peace - Thailand - politics - Abhisit Vejjajiva

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Sunday told the Thai public that his government will maintain peace in the country, saying that there is no reason for the military to stage a coup for the time being.

Speaking during his weekly television and radio address, Mr. Abhisit urged the people to receive and digest news, especially on conflicts within society, with utmost care, and gave assurances that government would try to prevent any civil disorder from occurring.

“There have been reports on conflicts which could lead to violence during the past week,” said Mr Abhisit, adding that certain groups of people wanted to create panic and fear, and there was even talk about a coup.

“The government wants to reemphasise that there are no conditions to date [to warrant] creating such incidents,” said Mr. Abhisit.

“Regarding the (national) economy, it’s recovering on a sustainable basis, while on politics there is a parliamentary system to continuously check the government’s performance,” said Mr Abhisit.

“Political opposition parties are about to submit a no-confidence motion against the government and this is an important opportunity to probe the government’s works under the parliamentary system.”
