Indie filmmaker Anocha Suwichakornpong, who made her feature debut with "Mundane History", was one of three winners for the Tiger Award at this year's International Film Festival Rotterdam.

On its surface, "Mundane History" ("Jao Nok Krajok") is a family drama about a paralysed young man and the friendship he develops with his male nurse. The Tiger Awards jury stated that it is "constantly surprising [and] offers philosophical and political dimension of Thai society, while presenting a seemingly mundane story. To us, this film appeals to both intellect and spirituality. We are impressed by the film's accomplished way to interplay abstract ideas and harrowing reality".

The panel was head by Mexican filmmaker Amat Escalante and comprised French actress-singer Jeanne Balibar, Polish-Dutch filmmaker Urszula Antoniak, Philip Cheah, the former director of the Singapore International Film Festival and Ugandan actor and activist Okello Kelo Sam.

Two other titles were chosen from the 15-strong competition, which is for first- or second-time directors. The other winners were "Agua Fría de Mar" ("Cold Water of the Sea") by Paz Fabrega of Costa Rica and "Alamar" ("To the Sea") by Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio of Mexico. The awards were handed out on Friday, and the fest wrapped up on Sunday.
