Thai police arrested and questioned a suspect on Monday after an M-79 grenade had been fired into the compound of the First Battalion of the 1st Infantry Regiment near the Victory Monument in Bangkok. The compound is the official residence of Army Chief Gen Anupong Paochinda.

The incident took place opposite the building of Thai channel National Broadcast Television (NBT), on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road.

The explosives were thought to be fired from a tollway in front of the battalion.

Two soldiers were injured in the attack. Sgt Preechai Parnsamut suffered abdominal injury and Private Noom Srifueng's left arm was wounded.

The soldiers were rushed to Phra Mongkul Hospital.

Police believed that the attack was aimed at trying to instigate chaos.

Pol Maj Gen Amnuey Nimmanoh said that police would check video clips from the security cameras on the tollways which run over the site.
