Fugitive former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was spotted in the southeastern European country of Montenegro this weekend, a local TV station reported Monday.

Mr Thaksin was seen in the coastal medieval old town of Budva on Sunday.

He was reportedly enjoying coffee and cakes in one of the area's posh hotel with his entourage, TV Vijesti reported, quoting witnesses.

Mr Thaksin has a Montenegrin and a Nicaraguan passport, and it is also rumoured that he has obtained Montenegrin citizenship as well. However, officials in the former Yugoslav republic have refused to confirm this information.

Early Tuesday, the former PM announced on Twitter that he may be back to UAE by Friday.

The tweet said: "By Friday, I may have returned to Dubai".
