Thai police are searching for two men suspected of killing Bannang Sata police chief Colonel Sompian Eksomya, fatally wounding a senior sergeant major, and injuring two other officers in the southern Thai province of Yala last Friday.

The suspects were identified as Matorhae Silae, 31, and Yukeebeulee Jehdeemae, 31. Both are also wanted for a number of other security-related crimes.

Police are also hunting down Mukta Alimama who allegedly masterminded the bombing.

Police believe the suspects went into hiding along the borders shared by Bannang Sata and Krong Pinang districts after they staged the bomb attack and opened fire on Col Sompian's pickup last Friday.

Col Sompian was killed in the attack, while Pol Snr Sgt Major Sophon Intharaborown was pronounced dead on Sunday at Yala General Hospital after three days in intensive care.

The two other police officers, who were seriously wounded, are Lieutenant Kittisak Loma and Corporal Rawikorn Sangsiri.

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will preside over Pol Col Sompien's funeral on behalf of Their Majesties at Wat Klong Play in Hat Yai district of Songkhla on Wednesday.

Pol Snr Sgt Maj Sophon will receive a posthumous seven-step salary rise and be promoted to police colonel.

Col Sompian's 13-year-old son will receive scholarships until graduation and will be accepted into the police force if he wants a career as a policeman.

Pol Corporal Rojjanin Phoowaphongphithak, another son of Sompian, could request a transfer away from the deep South where he had been stationed, at the request of Sompian's widow, Phimchana Phoowaphong-phithak.
