Montenegro police confirm former Thai PM Thaksin was given citizenship - politics - Montenegro - Thaksin Shinawatra - Thailand

Montenegro's police Wednesday confirmed former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was in the southeastern European country and holds a passport of the former Yugoslav republic.

Mr Thaksin arrived on March 13 by a private plane from Dubai to the Montenegrin coastal town of Tivat, police spokeswoman Tamara Ralevic said in a brief statement.

"Mr Thaksin Shinawatra is a citizen of Montenegro and he is here at the moment. The police have no grounds to take any measures based on its competencies," the statement said.

Earlier, local media reported Mr Thaksin was spotted in coastal Budva's medieval old town on Sunday.

Montenegro's officials have so far declined to say how Mr Thaksin obtained the citizenship of the Balkan state.
