Bangkok police preparing for Saturday's street marches; Red Shirt leaders considering disruption of MRT and BTS services

Traffic policemen at all stations in Bangkok have been ordered to put more effort into controlling heavy congestion anticipated on Saturday, The Nation reported. 

The areas of most concern are Pratunam and the Rama I intersection, covering Siam Centre and Siam Paragon malls, as traffic jams are common in these areas, said Pol Maj General Phanu Kerdlarpphol, who is in charge of traffic management in Bangkok.

Maj Gen Phanu said protests in small groups were easier to handle than largescale marches similar to the one red-shirted protesters held last weekend.

He said police would negotiate with the leaders of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) to free up some areas they have occupied on Rajdamnoen Avenue and the Royal Plaza to allow space for the annual Red Cross fair events from March 30 to May 7.

According to a UDD source, Saturday's campaign to "meet and greet" Bangkok people is aimed at disrupting traffic and blocking city streets and forcing negotiations with the Abhisit government.

"The disruption is needed because middle-class people like Bangkok residents are naturally reluctant to express themselves, unless their lives are affected," the source explained.

Late Thursday Red Shirt leaders were considering disruption to MRT and BTS services, but that is still being discussed.
