Thailand's Taoist community display mutilated body parts during the annual Vegetarian Festival - Thailand - photo - Phuket

PEOPLE with model helicopters and drills pierced through parts of their body have been paraded through the streets of Thailand, as part of a macabre festival. Members of Thailand's Taoist community displayed their mutilated body parts during the annual Vegetarian Festival.

Devotees of Phuket's forty Chinese shrines also run across hot coals and climb eight-metre-high ladders of blades.

People perform the self-torture as part of a ritual to act as mediums for the gods to shift evil spirits away from individuals in the community onto themselves.
