About 100 metropolitan police raided one of the most well-known illegal casino in Bangkok and arrested 199 gamblers, Bangkok Post online reported on Wednesday.
The raid early Wednesday morning, was led by Pol Lt-Gen Winai Thongsong, the metropolitan police chief.
The casino was located in adjoining ground floors of two two- storey buildings in the middle of a community. The premises are surrounded with high walls topped with barbed wire. They can be accessed through several entrances, each fitted with steel doors manned by guards around the clock.
Police rounded up 199 gamblers, 114 women and 85 men, and seized a large amount of gambling equipment including tables for baccarat and card games and an amount of cash. The gamblers were later taken by bus to the Metropolitan Police headquarters to hear gambling charges.
Some of the gamblers tried to break open a back door and the wall to escape, hurled abuse at and attacked the police, who used a tear gas to stop them, police said.
In the melee, a policeman was hit with an electric fan and suffered a cut over his right eyebrow.
