Mazda Motor Corporation today announced that it has commenced production of the Mazda2 (known as Mazda Demio in Japan) at the new passenger car plant at AutoAlliance Thailand Co., Ltd. (AAT), a joint venture manufacturing facility with Ford Motor Company. Mazda2 units produced at AAT will be sold mainly in the ASEAN markets. | A Ford-Mazda joint venture on Monday unveiled a 500-million-dollar factory for small passenger cars in Thailand, but stopped short of announcing when production will start. Auto-Alliance Thailand (AAT), a joint venture between Ford and Mazda that started in 1995 to produce pickup trucks, is expanding manufacturing capability at its Rayong plant to produce the Ford Fiesta and Mazda2 models, both small fuel-efficient passenger cars. |

Mazda has received much praise for their RX line of cars, with the 2003 RX-8 replacing the popular RX-7. As the only major car manufacturer to use a rotary engine, I was interested to see how it performed. Rotary engines inherently offer a compact, comparably lightweight engine, operating at higher RPM that standard piston engines. Did it deliver the same excitement as a V-6 with similar horsepower? Did it deliver zoom-zoom? | Beating rhythmically underneath the hood is the heart of the the RX-7 and RX-8 — a Wankel rotary engine. Wankel is such a funny sounding name, but the rotary engine (originally conceived and developed by Dr. Felix Wankel) is much more energy efficient than a typical combustion engine with pistons and cylinders. |
